This is a brilliant idea for tying down things on a roof rack. You can just hide it under the hood when not in use and the risk of paint damage is minimized compared to using the tow points. I wish I could claim I thought of it, but it was news to me earlier today.

That's an awesome idea actually. And you can use them to do that stunt from death proof!

Put one in the front and one in the rear and you can carry 16 foot long 2X4s with a car. They hang along the passenger side. Back in high school and college, I was a pole vaulter. Used to carry 16 foot long fiberglass poles all over the place that way. Once went from Cape Cod to Notre Dame and back for the AAU nationals with 4 16 foot poles strapped to the side of a Plymouth Horizon TC3. If your out and you need to improvise, tie a tee shirt or a rope so that there is a knot on one end. Open the hood, slide knot inside the engine bay and close the hood.

I saw this one when I was looking for canoe tie downs a year ago. It's brilliant - thanks for sharing!
