Ferrari GTO Fetches Nearly $40 Million—But Is That Enough?

Tom

Was its nearly $40 million selling price a bargain?

The Monterey auction festivities started with perhaps the most anticipated sale of the weekend, the Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta offered by Bonhams. Some pre-sale estimates had the price starting with a 5, and we’re not talking about $50,000. Officially the auction house didn’t print an estimate.

FInal hammer price? $34.65 million. After the fees, that’s $38,115,000. That’s a chunk of change, but not as much as some people expected. Will that set the tone for the rest of the weekend, or was there something about that particular car that put off some possible buyers? Together we shall see.
