More than half a century ago, the Datsun 240Z changed everything. Suddenly the world had a modern sports car that sold for less than the status quo. The 240Z could outrun the costlier MGB and immediately became a success on all fronts.
“Nissan Z: 50 Years of Exhilarating Performance” captures those early days: the genesis, the prototypes, the wins. Then the book follows the Z-car story all the way to today, making stops at each generation and offering sidebars on the big race efforts, the people behind the car, and the special editions–including the twin-cam Z432 and Z432R models.
Also discussed are other models that added to the Nissan lore, like the Datsun roadsters and the Skyline, from the first Prince model to the latest GT-R. Recent big Z-car sales are brought into the fold, including some that have topped six figures. Much of this story might be known to the Z-car diehards, but together it presents a well-rounded look at an icon.
The book ends with thoughts from Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the Nissan GT-R. We won’t spoil it, but he does hint that the Z-car story still has chapters yet to be written.
