RX-792P to headline Mazda’s effort at Monterey Motorsports Reunion

This week at Monterey, Mazda Motorsports will roll out one of the four-rotor Mazda RX-792 prototypes built during a period of fierce manufacturer competition in IMSA racing.

Originally crafted for IMSA's GTP category in a pivotal 1992 debut season, the car clinched a second-place podium at Watkins Glen International. Sadly, the GTP class's abrupt exit the next year dashed hopes for groundbreaking victories and innovation.

Encompassing the Heritage Collection lineup at Monterey are three beautiful pieces of Mazda history with three brilliant drivers. Taking the wheel of the 1989 Mazda 767B is none other than longtime Mazda factory driver Jonathan Bomarito. Meanwhile,  the spunky 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO will be driven by two-time MX-5 Cup Champion Jared Thomas. Last but certainly not least, putting the RX-792P back into the limelight is Tom Long.

A long, long time ago, I accompanied a friend to Mr. Downing’s shop. I think we were picking up a turbo. Or maybe dropping one off.

Anyway, towards the end of the visit, Mr. Downing was like, Feel free to nose around and then show yourselves out.

I’m 99.97% postitive the RX-792 was parked there. Just, like, sitting there.
