See Vintage IndyCars up Close and at Speed

What's cooler than open-wheel race cars? Vintage open-wheel race cars.

Thankfully, the Vintage Indy Registry—a member of the Vintage Motorsports Council dedicated to the history and preservation of IndyCars—has four events scheduled this year that will exhibit a number of vintage IndyCars at speed during IndyCar's Bommarito 500, the Milwaukee Mile and the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

Are you planning on going to any events on the Vintage Indy Registry calendar this year?

Entering its third year, Vintage Indy™ today announced a four on-track event schedule presented by Hagerty® for 2020. Traverse City, Michigan-based Hagerty is the leading insurance agency for collector vehicles in the world and host to the largest network of collector car owners.

Vintage Indy is the on-track event extension of the Vintage Indy Registry™, which was founded in 2017. The organization is a member of the Vintage Motorsports Council and is dedicated to the history and preservation of Indianapolis Championship Cars.

WorldWide Technology Raceway at Gateway, home of IndyCar’s Bommarito 500, located in the shadow of the famed St. Louis Arch at Madison, IL will host an open testing session from 8 AM to 6 PM on Saturday, April 18. The “Vintage Indy Icebreaker” test will be open to all members’ cars and offers a unique opportunity for a full day of track time.

Moreover, an innovative “Happy Hour” timing session will be conduc1ed during the day’s last hour for vintage Indy car owner bragging rights. The event is open to the public and tickets will go on sale on March 3rd. Please visit www.traceway.com.

Moving into the summer, June 13 and 14 will see the vintage Indy cars back at the historic Milwaukee Mile in conjunction with ARCA’s Midwest Tour Milwaukee Mile 100 for Vintage Indy’s second annual “Legends at the Mile”. Last year saw the paddock filled with 24 iconic cars from the 1920s through the 1990s and multiple on-track appearances over two days.

The 38th annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in Schenley Park will take place on July 25-26. This year’s GP will feature, “Indy in the Park,” for historic vintage Indy cars. The weekend will not only provide a fan-friendly vintage Indy paddock, but will also see the cars making their debut on a scenic 2.33-mile road/street course circuit on Saturday and Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, presented by the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Foundation, started as a single-day race in 1983 and has grown into a motorsports festival with two full race weekends and 10 days of parties, parades, and car shows benefitting charity.

Last year, over 200,000 fans attended the Schenley Park weekend festivities. For further details, please visit pvgp.org.

Last but not least, August 21-22 is the date for Vintage Indy’s third edition of “Open Wheel Icons,” running in companion to IndyCar’s Bommarito 500 at WorldWide Technology Raceway at Gateway. 2019 saw a paddock of 28 vintage Indy cars, including six Dan Gurney AAA Eagles!

Also, Indy winners Al Unser Jr. and Arie Luyendyk headlined an autograph session featuring a total of five former “500” drivers. The cars will again appear in multiple on-track sessions over two days, and fan admission provides free access to the vintage Indy paddock.
