This year’s Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival, to be held on September 5, will feature MG as the honored marque, and the timing couldn’t be better. 2014 marks a lot of important anniversaries in the history of MG, which played a large role in the rebirth of American road racing after World War II. It is the 60th anniversary of Collier Cup MG races, the 55th anniversary of the first all-MG races in the United States (run by the MG Car Club), the 50th anniversary of the New England MG-T Register, and the eve of the 90th anniversary of the first MG, built in 1925.
In addition to all of this, MG is the featured car at this year’s Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International, and the MG vintage racers have selected Watkins Glen to be their “focus event” of the year. With all the celebration going on among MG enthusiasts, there are sure to be hundreds of rare and interesting MGs in Watkins Glen for the weekend, including some of the cars that competed in those first all-MG races in 1959 and 1960.
