Driving Our Shelby Through the Wild Wild West

The Central Oregon high desert is great drying country! Mount Hood is in the background.

Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak helped quiet our noisy power steering pump.

At 14 mpg, our Shelby can pass anything but a gas station. This one, sadly, was not open. It did make for a unique photo opportunity, though.

We finally cross the Columbia River into Washington State. It’s easy get used to the dash and long, scooped hood of the Shelby Mustang; these cars are such icons.

You could argue that a rough-and-tumble, high-horsepower car like a modified Shelby Mustang isn’t the most docile beast for in-town driving. For running the back roads of the wild wild west, however, we couldn’t think of a better tool than our old Shelby Mustang.

Man, are we having fun! From flinging her through the corners at 75 mph to passing three trucks at a time at up to 100 mph, this is the stuff that this car was born to do.

At this point, we’re in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and we’ve seen some fantastic country–from the high desert in Oregon to the beautiful wheat fields of Washington. Driving along the Columbia and Snake Rivers can be considered some of the best sites for driving in the world.

As for our power steering booster, the Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak did much to improve it. Still, we stopped at a friend’s shop in Coeur d’Alene and took a few minutes to retune, nut-and-bolt, and look over the Shelby. We needed to fix one tie-down bracket on the rear end that was hitting the exhaust system. We also tightened the front wheel bearings a bit, as they’d settled in and gotten a bit loose after a couple of thousand miles of use.

Tomorrow, we’re replacing the power steering pump with a GM-style pump and conversion kit that we’d had shipped. Borgeson saved our hides with their kit. It mounts the more efficient GM-style pump on a Mustang. We’re hoping that this is the final step to flawless power steering.
