How to put a bike rack on an air-cooled Porsche 911 | Project Porsche 911 Carrera

For the Radwood show at The Amelia, we had a plan: Let’s put an old-school BMX bike on our old-school Porsche 911. Clever, right?

While the car is from 1984, the bike is actually a bit newer. Call it a retro bike designed to look like one from 1984, though.

But how to mate the two? We’d need a rack.

So, to share with the rest of the class, here’s the hardware we used.

  • Thule Echelon bike mount purchased via Craigslist for $45. We replaced all the lock washers just because. This model is NLA, but looks like comparable Thule racks start at $229.95.
  • Thule Rapid Gutter Low mounts purchased via open-box special at Rack Attack for $199.96. (List is $249.95).
  • Thule 47-inch Squarebar load bars purchased for $139.95.

The instructions recommend at least 12 inches between the mounts, and we placed then 16.5 inches apart–thanks to the curvature of the Porsche’s roof, much further than that seemed to place the front mount at an odd angle relative to the front load bar. (Also, looking back, perhaps the Yakima’s round bars would have been a better fit here.)

Our used tray also came with some extra spacers that seemed to help accommodate that curvature. Again, YMMV. We also added lock washers to the wing knobs used to secure the rear mount.

Our findings? The rack feels solid, but we admit that we put the bike in the car for the drive up–just wasn’t up for sea trials on I-95 at 5:00 the morning of the event.

The rack whistles, too, starting at about 27 mph. The noises change depending on speed, though.

But it looks cool.

And golly gosh.  All the P-car guys around here make fun of my beater '72 with the mid-80's Peugeot "Urban Express" that goes everywhere with me.  I also put a canoe on it.  The racks are almost the same--basic Thule square gutter racks from the 80's

I was going to include a pic but can't see how to do that.

You know, I had someone on the Radwood show field offer to buy it–like, pulled out cash and everything.

That has got to be the first time I have seen a bike rack on a 911!   Was the man wanting to by the bike or the 911?

He wanted the rack. That bike's a keeper.

And here's another bike on a 911:
