Filmmaker and film historian Patrick Willems, however, argues that the modern cinematic car chase forever had the bar raised by John Frankenheimer and his three-hour epic Grand Prix.

I'll have to watch this later when I'm not working, but I totally agree with everything I've heard so far.
Doing driving scenes and car chases done as practically as possible really helps to ground the action.
