Ever had to start a vehicle by striking a shotgun shell with a hammer? Well, if you want to start up a vintage Field Marshal tractor, it's a necessary part of the start-up process.
Sure, it may be a blank cartridge, but that doesn't make the process any less unusual.

The tanks, are they turning over the entire reciprocating assembly, or are they just spinning the flywheel?

There were some early aircraft turbine engines that included a similar shot shell starter system for use as an inflight restart or un-manned field start procedure. One shot, literally< to get it up and running again.

I was actually thinking of that scene as I typed it, though I was aware of such a thing already. I actually was not aware of they movie till the re boot came out. Original is better!
