This 1999 Shelby Series 1 is one of the better-known examples of the Carroll Shelby creation. It’s dubbed “The Playboy Series 1,” as it was built specifically for Karen McDougal, 1998 Playboy Playmate of the Year.
The car was actually part of the prize package for McDougal winning the aforementioned honors. The magazine gave the impression that McDougal was a car enthusiast. It stated that the Shelby joined her “crowded garage” with a BMW 528 and a Toyota Camry.
Maybe the impression wasn’t without warrant. McDougal requested numerous modifications before taking possession. Among those included a “polished supercharger, upgraded clutch, four-piston brakes, fresh-air brake duct system, custom polished cat-back exhaust and HPC headers, bespoke leather interior with additional carbon-fiber trim, and “ghost”-painted Centennial Silver racing stripes.” She also wanted Carroll Shelby to sign it, but the seller notes that there’s no indication that Shelby did so.
Find this 1999 Shelby Series 1 up for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $100,000-$125,000.
