Brawn GP 001: The car that helped write F1’s greatest underdog story

Facing a global financial crisis, Honda announced its departure from Formula 1 in late 2008, yet that didn’t mean the team folded.

Instead, the Honda team’s former technical director, Ross Brawn, led a team buyout.

Now fitted with a Mercedes powerplant, the team returned to the grid in 2009 as Brawn GP with drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

What transpired that season was nothing short of a fairytale miracle: Eight first-place finishes out of a total of 15 podium wins, enough to secure the 2009 World Constructor’s Championship.

Following the conclusion of the 2009 season, Mercedes-Benz bought the rights to the team, creating Mercedes GP.

This car, chassis No. 001, was driven by Barrichello to nine top-10 finishes and was later gifted to Jenson Button after the 2009 season.

Chassis 001 also represents the only Brawn GP race car ever offered for public sale.
