There’s a reason why this 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen is valued at more than $55 million. Reason number one, Juan Manuel Fangio. Reason number two, Sir Stirling Moss. Reason number three … well, there are a lot of reasons.
El Maestro, as Fangio is often called, won five Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championships. During those championships he drove this example to victory in his native country of Argentina at the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix.
Moss, one of the greatest F1 drivers to never win a championship, competed with the Mercedes in the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, earning fastest lap honors. He raced it with the Streamliner bodywork you see today, and this is the first Streamliner-bodied W 196 R ever offered for private ownership.
