How original is this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster? It retains its matching-numbers engine, chassis, gearbox, body and rear axle. The 300 SL still comes with the five original wheels it was initially delivered with. Plus, it wears the same Silver-Grey Metallic paint and Red leather upholstery when it was new.
Douglas Stearly, a famed USAC team owner, fielded entries for notable drivers such as Troy Ruttman and Mario Andretti. He also owned this 300 SL, too.
When Stearly wasn’t wearing just the hat of a car owner, he also raced. In fact, he competed with this 300 SL against the likes of Stirling Moss, Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby. After 1959, though, he rarely drove the car. Stearly owned the 300 SL for 50 years, but it has just less than 36,000 miles on it.
Find this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $1,200,000-$1,600,000.
