Tom Hartley Jnr calls this Ferrari 512 M one of the most original surviving examples of the 15 made. It also has Le Mans history, too, with two starts in the storied race.
Ferrari first configured this example as a 512 S (one of 25) for the 1970 season. That year, privateer Georg Loos (who would go on to field the 1977 championship-winning Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft team), bought it and campaigned it in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, he and his teammate Helmut Kelleners (Spa and Nürburgring winner), DNF-ed after an accident.
At the end of 1970, Loos returned the Ferrari to the factory to upgrade it to the M spec, one of only 15 converted in period. He, along with co-driver Franz Pesch, failed to finish again at Le Mans, this time due to engine failure. After the season, Le Mans banned 5-liter cars and this Ferrari’s in-period racing career ended. Now, it’s fresh from a preservation restoration by Ferrari specialists and ready for historic events such as the Le Mans Classic.
