Before Shelby and Ford entered into a long-term agreement with the Cobra, Carroll Shelby had to build a few prototypes of his idea for a world-beating sports car. Enter Ed Hugus, who not only financially backed the initial idea, but also provided ideas and facilities to help make those prototypes happen.
Hugus suggested to Shelby to work with AC to use their cars as the foundation for his concept. Hugus also financed cars CSX 2001, 2003-2006. Ford provided Shelby with CSX 2000 and 2002, three engines and $20,000. However, it was CSX 2003 and 2004 that Ford used to test Shelby’s cars, and Hugus not only funded those, his Pittsburgh shop helped build them.
This prototype has an Experimental High Performance (XHP) 260 cubic-inch V8, which this example is believed to be the only one to retain. It displayed at Sebring in 1963 before heading to Ford in Michigan to be tested by the Special Vehicles Team and Henry Ford II himself. After that, Ford and Shelby entered into an agreement to produce 125 units of the iconic Shelby creation.
Find this 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra for auction at Broad Arrow Auctions, with an estimated value of $1,500,000-$2,000,000.
