Attaching a winning driver’s name to a production car is normally a recipe for sales success, but that wasn’t the case for the Schuppan-Porsche 962CR.
Developed by 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan, the 962CR features a body penned by Michael Simcoe–now the vice president of GM Global Design–and a twin-turbo flat-six designed by Hans Mezger–the legendary Porsche engineer who blessed the world with the 911’s air-cooled flat-six as well as the 917’s flat-12.
Although a total production of 50 examples was planned, less than a quarter of that was ever produced.
What happened? As the story goes, the Japanese bubble economy of the late 1980s finally “popped” in 1992, resulting in a country-wide economic downturn. The Japanese Art Sports Corporation, backing the Schuppan-Porsche project, pulled their funding. Schuppan was then left with little option other than halting production and filing for bankruptcy.
In the end, only seven examples of the Schuppan-Porsche are known to have been made, with this 962CR model being one of only two production models built.
Showing just 91 miles, this 962CR was previously auctioned at Mecum back in August. If you missed out on that sale, here’s your second chance.
