The ‘55 Corvette that never made it to production

GM’s Art and Colour department, led by Harley Earl, created this Corvette as a proposal model for 1955. While it didn’t make the cut, the prototype survived, and is now offered up for auction.

This car remained fairly similar to the 1954 model. The big change would be an optional V8 with a high-performance solid lifter camshaft. (The prototype, however, still carried an inline-six.) Other differences included a decorative hood scoop, eggcrate front grille, slanted front-fender vents (with one side painted, the other in chrome for comparison), bumper-exit exhaust tips and a new trunk design.

The prototype never made it into production. With stagnant sales and the introduction of the Ford Thunderbird, GM execs decided to go in a different direction for the Corvette in 1956.

Find this 1954 Chevrolet Corvette S.O. 2151 Prototype up for auction at Gooding & Company, with an estimated winning bid of $1,500,000-$2,000,000.
