What do Mark Donohue and Helmut Marko have in common?
That's right, both drove this Camaro Z28 race car.
Most notably, Mark Donohue drove the Camaro to a first-place finish in the 1967 Trans-Am race at Marlboro Raceway, marking the very first Trans-Am win for both Roger Penske and Chevrolet.
Sometime after the 1967 race season, the Camaro was shipped to Europe by part-time Penske team member Peter Reinhart.
1968 and 1969 saw the Z28 secure several race wins across Austria and Germany, with Helmut Marko–the current head of Red Bull’s driver development program–behind the wheel during latter of the two years.
While it continued to race until 1979, the Camaro was eventually abandoned for some 35 years after it was disassembled in 1981.
In 2016, the Z28 returned to the U.S. and underwent a restoration that was completed in 2020. That same year, the car was shown at the Amelia concours alongside the other remaining Sunoco Camaros, where it won the Amelia Award.
