What’s more American than Evel Knievel, the Indy 500 and legendary open wheel driver Gary Bettenhausen? Well, that’s the combination you get here, with this 1977 Dragon Offenhauser dubbed the “Agajanian/Evel Knievel Special.”

J.C. Agajanian is not only known for his two Indy 500 wins, but also as one of motorsports’ greatest promoters. His ties with Knievel date back to Knievel’s early days, when he was doing stunts at Ascot Park, which Agajanian promoted events at. After that, Knievel soon became a household name, and returned a favor to Agajanian by co-sponsoring Agajanian’s IndyCar team for the 1977 campaign.

Bettenhausen, who won six times over his long IndyCar career, made 21 starts in the Indy 500. Unfortunately, in his 1977 Indy 500 attempt he finished 16th after suffering a clutch issue. Bettenhausen’s best finish in the Agajanian/Evel Knievel Special was a second place, earned at what’s now called Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Find this 1977 Dragon Offenhauser “Agajanian/Evel Knievel Special” Indy Car for auction at Mecum, with an estimated value of $325,000-$375,000.
