This Ford Escort–one of three “Monte Tarmac Specials” built by Ford–is the very car that won the 1979 Manx Rally with British rally legend Russell Brookes behind the wheel.
After Brookes raced it, the car moved to Ireland and into the hands of another rally legend, Billy Coleman. In 2003, Montgomery Motorsport rebuilt the Escort, retaining the original shell and changing the livery to the one it wears today.
Many consider the Monte Tarmac Specials some of the fastest Escorts ever built at Boreham–besting many favorites in rally racing like the Lancia Stratos and Porsche entries.
Find this 1979 Ford Escort up for auction at Silverstone Auctions, with an estimated winning bid of £150,000-£170,000 (approximately $187,245-$212,211).
