They dub this Porsche 911 “The Last Waltz.” It was the last air-cooled 911 to leave the Zuffenhausen factory. However, that’s not all about this Porsche.
Note that this was not the last air-cooled 911 made. Jerry Seinfeld bought that car built on March 31, 1998. However, this was the last to leave the factory. Why? It spent nearly six months in the Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) department being outfitted with options unique to this example.
Coincidentally, the car was completed on March 27, 1998–the same day Ferry Porsche died. German author Clauss Vanderborg, who ordered the car, was believed to have been a friend of Ferry’s. He dedicated this car to him. There’s a plaque on the dashboard that says, “In memoriam Prof Ferry Porsche” and a quote in German from the 1944 film Die Feuerzangenbowle: “Only the memories we carry with us are real, the dreams we spin and the desires that drive us true. But with that we can be satisfied.”
