You won’t find another Ferrari like this one on the road. How do we know? Because this is the only one of its kind ever made.
Of the just four examples of the 340 Mexico made to compete in the 1952 Carrera Panamericana, this one is the sole Spyder built.
Sadly, the Mexico Spyder would not compete in the Panamericana but would later make its competition debut in 1953 at an SCCA endurance race at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida–and wearing blue, no less.
Bill Spear, a wealthy Connecticut privateer, piloted the Spyder alongside a 26-year-old driver just breaking into motorsports: Phil Hill. Despite several broken wheel spokes, the duo placed first in class and second overall at MacDill.
In 2011, shortly after being acquired by its current owner, the Ferrari was restored to its factory specifications (and original shade of red).
Today, the 340 Mexico Spyder retains its numbers-matching chassis and 4.1-litre “long-block” V12 engine, and has only made one known public appearance since restoration work was completed: The 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
