This Ferrari is extra special. It’s one of 34 GTOs built with Tipo 1962 coachwork. It’s the only one equipped with a 4-liter engine. And it’s the only Ferrari GTO Tipo raced by Scuderia Ferrari. It’s certainly a winner–both historically as a race car and more recently as a concours participant.
Let’s go back to its racing days. This Ferrari won its class and finished second overall in the 1962 Nürburgring 1000km, with Mike Parkes and Willy Mairesse behind the wheel. Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini also raced it in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1962. It qualified second at the Circuit de la Sarthe, but an off-course excursion hurt the radiator and ended the team’s race early.
Fast forward to this century, and the GTO has presented well in some of the most prestigious concours. It earned a second at Pebble Beach in 2011 and then a best of show at the 2012 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.
