Aston Martin produced more than 1000 examples of the DB4–rare, but not exceptionally so. Of them, only 70 were convertibles. Of those, only eight were left-hand drive. This is one of those eight, but that’s just the start of what makes this particular DB4 special.
Take a look under the hood. There you’ll find a matching-numbers Special Series (SS) engine. Triple SU carburetors. Larger valves. A 9:1 compression ratio. It upped the power from 240 to 266 when compared to the standard engine. Just 33 convertibles were equipped with the SS power plant.
Finished in metallic Black Pearl over Red Leather–the only left-hand-drive convertible with that combination–this Aston Martin was also displayed at the 1963 Los Angeles International Motor Show.
Find this 1963 Aston Martin DB4 “SS Engine” Series V Convertible up for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $1,500,000-$1,800,000.
