The Shelby GT350 frequently ranks as one of the top cars that collectors want. However, if you’re looking for a GT350 that’ll really grab one’s attention, go for a GT350 R. Shelby made only 36 examples, and this is one of them.
Shelby built the GT350 R for SCCA B Production competition. To help strip about 250 pounds, they removed the steel bumpers, rear seats and sound deadening, and replaced glass windows with Plexiglas and the hood with fiberglass. To improve aero, they removed the rear quarter window vents and covered them, and also installed a vent in the rear window. The 289-cubic-inch K-code engine from Ford was modified, increasing horsepower from 306 to around 350. The Shelby GT350 R won the SCCA B Production title in 1965 and 1966.
This particular example was campaigned by Michael Reina and raced with Don Kearney in the 1966 Daytona 24. It finished second in its class. It then passed through the hands of several racers, before being stored for a number of years. It then underwent a complete restoration in 2000.
Find this 1965 Shelby GT350 R up for auction at Broad Arrow Auctions, with an estimated winning bid of $900,000-$1,100,000.
