Went to the scrap metal yard for a piece of half inch plate this morning for a different project.

Took this E36 M3box.

Ran it across the scales. Full tank of gas, as delivered (more or less), minus driver.

2440lbs.

I think I can get it below 2000.....

Ive actually been eating a lot healthier lately. Dropped 8lbs since starting to try to get healthier. (Quitting smoking added fifty pounds to me)

That wasn't a criticism. I used to mountain bike, and I fell into the same trap as everyone else. Paying hundreds of dollars to save a few grams. I finally came to my senses, and was like "if  you want to save ounces, loose some weight"

+50 lbs to quit smoking, totally a fair trade, but yeah, I could stand to drop 20 or 30 lbs.

Diggin the build, and knowing you, it will be sano.

Didn't think you were! However, plasma cutter weight reduction is soooo much easier.......

So, i took a minute on E36 M3box this morning.

Weight reduction of the center console as its already out for the shifter swap.

Airba module.

Center console started at 12.18 lbs.

I removed the aluminum basket, center cubby, lid reinforcement. Dropped 8lbs.

10.3lbs in 15 minutes. Im ok with that.

Took the front end apart for trouble shooting. No smoking gun yet.

Strut mount bearings are crunchy. So i took them apart and cleaned them up and regreased them.

Tie rod ends are notchey. Replacement on order. Worst case, i have them for the acr.

And the 550lb front springs lifted it....

So, i made it better/worse with grease and new tie rod ends. Play in the wheel is gone. However, its all but uncontrollable with bumpsteer and road following. All in the alignment. Which im not fixing until i find and fix the stiff steering issues.

So, to recap: adjuted tore pressure. Greased and cleaned strut bearings. Regreased ball joints. Replaced torle rod ends. Added massive toe out. All for no change in steering effort or issues.

Has to be the rack, right?????

Ummmm, "added massive toe out, all but uncontrollable road following"

That sounds related right there...

In reply to Robbie :

That i agree with. Like i said, alignment. Figured toe out, if it was alignment related, would change steering effort. Unfortunately, resistance to turning intentionally is unchanged.

Those things still can hold their own. Drove a friend's Neon ACR out West at Willow last year and couldn't believe how capable the thing was being 20+ years old.

Agreed. If I could find an ACR in decent original condition for a reasonable price I'd be...divorced & looking for a place I could store 3 90's cars, with a bed & shower for me.

Well now is definitely not the time for me to be shopping while the DSM is in pieces in the garage lol, but somewhere around Challenge budget depending on what it has vs. what it needs. I'm really starting to think I need a white one though to match the Miata & DSM...
