I feel the need to know which engine is in it. If it's a 3.9 V6 it should have an NV3500. Some of those had the 2.5 AMC 4 cylinder and an AX15. Then there was a Chrysler 4 cylinder and some other trans I don't remember. It's also possible its a factory 318 5 speed truck. I'm pretty sure only that last option is rare.

In reply to Chadeux:

The other trans is a New Process a525 / New Venture 2500. Only used behind the 4 cyl in the Daks.

No 4-cyl extended cabs were built, so that's a V6 rig and the 5-speed isn't useful for the 2.5/2.4 RWD swap.

the A-525 was the FWD 5-speed transaxle that was built from the A460/465 and is as strong as glass and not really desired except by those that are restoring a GLH-S.

I'm strange and consider the the Dakota too big and heavy for a turbo 4 so I go straight for a small block Dodge which is an easier bolt in swap. If this truck was a bit closer I would have bought it by now though.

I think you're thinking of the NP-535. It was the 5-speed used behind the early (pre-92 or so) 2.5 and 3.9 trucks. Made of glass, known to frag at stock power levels (which aren't much with an NA 2.5 or pre-Magnum 3.9).

This should have an AX-15 if it's a V6 truck. Much stouter, and with the LA bellhousing pattern any small block will bolt up (or new Hemi, but that would require significant finagling). The AX-15 is fairly stout...but an NV3500/NV4500 is arguably quite a bit better.

With a bellhousing swap, the 2.2/2.5 will bolt up to this AX-15. They're out there.

Actually they did. I salvaged a a drive shaft from a 4 cyl manual extended cab. It was a late 90's build with the AMC pushrod 2.5L . Total unicorn.

They DID build a tiny tiny number of Dodge 2.5 TBI / 5spd ext cab dakotas. They may have been limited to 1989 or 1990 as those are the only specimens i've ever seen. Once they went to the 97-up body style with the AMC 2.5, ext cab 4cyl/5spd trucks became fairly common. A close friend owns one (a 2000) that i've driven extensively. GREAT truck if you don't need a ton of power. 24mpg @75 mph.

Dang it. I keep crossing up that trans with the transaxle. I've had both. Just gave a 535 to a buddy. He also got a Daytona from me with a 525.
