Finally decided to use it as the parts car you bought it to be?

And where do I find the online tuning classes?

Will you forego installing sedan engine in the Yugo? Can't blame you. Either way, I'm happy read about the thread title again.

HPAcademy is the first one I found. Looks to be professional and well laid out. It's something I'd like to do someday, but it's not in the cards right now.

In reply to Slaab:

Currently undecided on what the actual action plan is. I'm offering it up to friends right now, but if nobody wants it, it'll be hauled away by local Pick'N'Pull (after I rob it of all it's useful bits of course). It'll get listed here, on XWeb, CL, and maybe even Mirafiori before I call the scrappers, though. Somebody somewhere has got to want some of it.

I've taken classes from HPA, and I can tell you they're worth the money. It really pays off quickly when you're paying for dyno time. Past that, I thought I had a good idea how to tune before the classes, but I was quickly proven wrong. Classes can help you make the difference between difficult things like cold start and transient load tuning and just getting it to run.

Yugo, if you can't play nicely, you don't get the privilege of having an engine. Bad Yugo!

If you look at the front plate I think that it explains it all.

In reply to brad131a4:

Haha, yep. I'll be keeping those plates.

I took it easy tonight. I grabbed the last few things I needed from the Yugo engine bay before calling a few guys in from the band that practices a few doors down to help push it out of the shop. I am sure the landlord is going to love that thing lingering outside.

After that, I just rolled the 128 into place to dry off and come up to room temperature for a day.

Here's where the 128 engine bay stands for the time being for those who have forgotten (myself included). Things are certainly about to change, though.

Tomorrow will probably mark the true beginning of the 128 side of things. Possibly the end of an era, but certainly the beginning of another.

How exciting! So, straight engine swap with the MS or do you have other things planned?

In reply to RossD:

Just a straight swap for now. I think the added displacement, extra gear, and fuel injection will keep us satisfied for a while. I am keeping my eye out for a hotter cam that fits into the budget, though.

I don't really expect this thing to be a real ball of fire in a straight line. It looks like a warmed over (Cam, header, exhaust, carbs) 1.5l will make a little more than 100 at the wheels. I'm sure the tired bottom end is going to leave a fair bit on the table, but the MS might make up for some of that. I have a (long term) plan for the bottom end, though.

There's probably not going to be any forced induction on this car. Well, maybe a Eaton M45 a few years down the road.

Fuel only MS gains will be pretty limited. You can find a good deal more power by getting the timing optimized though. Any plans to add spark into your MS future?

Love the progress.

In reply to Mezzanine:

I'm loosely planning on controlling spark with the MS, yeah. I'm not sure which route to take, though. I used the VR sensor as my tach signal for the MS just to make it easier down the road should I decide to go fuel and spark.

The motor is about ready to come out of the 128 at this point. There's a handful of wires that I need to label, then it's just motor mounts and drive shafts and it'll be on the ground.

I had to cut the exhaust off since there's no flanges or slip joints. The rear section was a nice surprise!

Hey neat! Are you going to reuse the muffler, or put something new in?

At the very least, you need to cut those tags off and mount them on the wall somewhere. I'd keep half of the muffler body with the tags.

I haven't decided yet. At the very least it will need repacked. I need to dig up that article on how to do such a thing and look into material costs. I'm planning on fabricating a new exhaust for this car anyways as its currently too loud.

In related news, I woke up entirely too early and got crackin'. You know you are in deep when you work on your project before AND after work.

Call up Delta Cams in Tacoma. They can regrind the cam for little $$. They might even have some blank cams that they can do. Can't quite remember what would be the best street cam for it. Bayless used to have a really nice chart on there cams page that gave the specs on their cams and what they were good for. I think I have one of them from the mid 80's if I can dig it up I'll post some of the numbers if you're interested. Good to see you back on the 128.

Oooh. Definitely worth a look. I'm stuck at work all weekend, but I might try to sneak down there one day this week.

I started cleaning up the bay and looked into swapping the timing belt tensioner components and motor mounts over to the 1500 last night.

Probably an abbreviated night on the shop tonight. I've been burning the candle at both ends for the last week or so and it's starting to catch up with me.

Wow, the placement of the coolant hoses and the oil fill make a lot more sense on a 128 than they do on an X.

Great work, you are an inspiration!

Aaaaaaaand we're back! There were more than a few days there where I was either waiting on parts or feeling under the weather, but progress is happening once again.

Last night we got all of the ancillaries swapped from the 1300 to the 1500 along with a new water pump. Then this happened:

My apologies for the grainy photo.

So, apart from a few typical engine swap hurdles, everything should just plug right back in.

Things that I know are going to be slightly different or require some time are:

Throttle linkage. The 128 used a throttle rod vs. the Yugo's cable setup. Hopefully there's combination of parts that will bolt in.

Clutch cable. Ever so slightly different. Cables probably interchange, though.

Fuel pump mounting, wiring, and plumbing. I need to liberate the pump and filter brackets from the Yugo and come up with a mounting scenario for the 128. Fuel Injection safe hose all around, obviously.

Swaybar -> transmission clearance. I'll cross this bridge when I get to it.

Exhaust. Still undecided on reusing the Abarth box or sourcing something new.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all that I've got right now.

I'm still here pecking away at the engine and transmission swap idiosyncrasies.

Converting from a throttle rod linkage to cable setup was a pain. I ended up modifying the Yugo pedal assembly and made a bracket out of some random aluminum in the recycle bin. I guess I didn't take a before shot of the pedal; it was much less, uhhh, organically shaped when I started.

It's not particularly heinous once powder coated and installed. Hopefully it works out, I just kinda copied it's position relative to the brake pedal from the Scirocco.

The clutch cable was a fun one. I'm fairly certain that the stock 128 part would have worked, had I not destroyed it during disassembly. The 128 and Yugo parts had the same overall length, but the sheath length in the Yugo was about an inch longer. I just shortened the Yugo cables sheath about .25" more than the 128 unit and installed it like a factory part.

The exhaust so far is just the pre-cat down turn from the Yugo mated to the post-cat slip joint.

Overall, we are getting closer and closer.

You'll need to log in to post.
