well, did a 4th gear pull to 8000rpm and, it's pooched now. It sounds like a Subaru and there is low oil pressure. The top end sounds pretty tappety especially on a quick rev.
There is no smoke and no fluid leak, oil is full
Don't these engines use hydraulic lifters? If you roached the bottom end and have no oil pressure, the lifters could have collapsed and gotten rackety.

They are hydraulic but I definitely have a knocking sound above 2k rpm so most likely it's roached.
I don't know if I can afford to rebuild it we're trying to buy a house and the last couple of years have proven that to be very difficult. I might just have to put this off for later in life and give up on Bonneville.
Saw this on the road today in Livonia MI and man I still dig these cars:

Also, it would be really cool if your rattle was just a pooched belt tensioner banging around.
What's up with this? It's one of my favorite projects!

It still lives. I have talked with Interprep in New York who are basically the Alpha and Omega regarding the Mazda KL. It won't be cheap, but nothing done right is. They're going to balance and blueprint it and I need to buy a few things that will be required for the balancing which right now are the twin-plate clutch and flywheel. I'm looking at dry sump oiling too, Interprep seems to think I pumped all the oil out of the pan, the data logger had me at 9300 rpm when it went.
If everything pans out I will have them build a second engine for it. There is lso a 6-speed conversion that has just been made available for these and I'm looking into doing built 2-6.
It's not dead I'm just having a tough time with business and revenue is slow right now.
The Salt Bat will fly again.
