I love this! I'll be watching
This was not fun . . .
No wonder they install the engine from the bottom.
Empty and still filthy after the first spray down
Out and waiting on the next owner . . .
In the coming weeks, I'll perform all the maintenance stuff on the 4.8L. I have two oil pans I'm testing out for this, GTO front sump and the Muscle car shorty rear sump.
You ought to have plenty of room for a LS in there now. I'm looking forward to seeing this go back together.
Yesterday I waved goodbye to the Duratec V6 and Getrag 221.
I was supposed to clean off my work benches and start prepping some parts for CL/forums/fleaBay.
Berk that!! Z06 Cam swap in the 4.8L sounds like WAY more fun.
I really wanted the LS1 HotCam (219/228 with 0.525/0.525 and 112), but the Z06 cam (204/218 with 0.551/0.547 and 117.5) and springs set me back only $150. To get the full specs on the Z06, I'll have to get longer pushrods due to the cam's smaller base circle (0.050"). Unless luck helps me out and drops a cheap HotCam off at the house, Z06 it is!!
I didn't installed the valve springs or button up the motor. I threw on a 6.0L timing chain and trash bagged the engine. The rest of the day was spent ordering tools and a timing chain dampener bracket.
I guess, I now HAVE to clean the work bench while I wait on stuff to be delivered
Just received 20 pages PCM pinout and wiring diagrams for the smelLS.
Luckily, the 4.8 only needs 4 wires to run. The smelLS PCM will stay to control the gauges and ABS.
As requested
Made a Summit Racing order today for a Trickflow timing chain dampener kit and engine lift plate for the 4.8L.
I currently have two oil pans for it, muscle car oil pan and GTO front sump oil pan. The muscle car pan isn't as deep as the truck pan, but it is rear sump. The LS steering rack is on the rear of the cross member. If that pan doesn't work, I can use the GTO pan. I would have modify to set the engine back a few inches.
That's all for now
Ever see the widebody Lincoln LS with the ProCharged 4.6L 4V Aluminator crate engine in it? It popped up at Power Tour 2011 and it was bonkers.
Not much info on that car other than the obvious blown DOHC 4.6. I did find out it has 9 inch rear in it.
Small update!! I finally found a 3.58 Gen I diff at Pull-a-Part yesterday. I only had my small tool box, I'll have to make a trip back this week.
If I catch up on and get ahead on this weeks studies, I may attempt placing the oil pans in the engine to determine the location of the lump.
Played around with the 4.8L today.
LS2 Timing chain and LS3 tensioner
Close er up!
Ready for 7200rpm!!
As much as I would love this to be a high RPM screamer . . . The cam, springs, and stock truck balancer will limit that.
The stock truck balancer + High RPM = cavitation in the water pump. One of those $2-300 fancy ass balancers would help, but no thanks. The only other engine related goodie will be push rods to use the full spec of the cam (stockers are a bit short).
While I continue to wait for parts for the Challenge Roach, I may tinker around the SmelLS for a few days . . . Maybe sell some E36 M3 I have laying around to recoup some monies!!
I have an LS1 Fluidampr (F-body application) NIB. Not looking to get full retail--let me know if you're interested.
In reply to ssswitch:
Press fit water pump pulley . . . Peeps over on LS1 tech have pressed it off and press on another . . . Meh . . Not worth the hassle at this time.
Cavitation seems to only occur when the enginge is "operating" in the higher RPM band for long periods of time. It should be fine for the occasional blast to 7200 rpm.
In reply to Will:
Too bad it doesn't work with the accessory drive on the 4.8L or LS6 Caddy . . . That and holiday shopping have rendered my acccount to a smoldering heap lol!!
