Time to undercoat the wheel wells. I'd waited to do this till all the other paint work was done because the undercoating can be cleaned off of other painted surfaces if overspray got on them where if other paints got oversprayed onto the undercoating it can't really be cleaned off. Undercoating really does help quiet old cars with steel wheel wells and just looks "right" to me and as mentioned previously undercoating also allowed me to spend less time doing metal work on the sectioned outer wheel wells.
While I've shot whole undersides using a big tip spray gun on Donks that were going to have big stereo systems and what not to reduce vibration I only wanted to do the wheel wells on this car. So rather than buying a gallon for use with a spray gun I bought a couple spray cans of a product I hadn't used before. 5 Star Advantage paintable rubberized undercoating. It was relatively cheap at 5-6 bucks for an 18 oz can at my local paint supplier which is about 1/4 the cost of 3M stuff. It sprayed out fine allowing me to change the appearance of the texture by varying distance from the surface being sprayed and speed of the spray pass. One can was more than enough for each wheel well so I had about half a can left over.
I'm excited now because this is the turning point where now I can start putting the car back together! As a matter of fact I'd forgotten to get pics of undercoating I wanted after removing all the masking before starting reassembly and jumped right into cleaning wheel well trim and drilling holes then installing trim. So there's already trim in the last pic.
Here's the pics. Note that now in the last pic the sectioning line in the outer wheel well has pretty much disappeared. With the car on the ground and a wheel/tire in place no one would ever know the outers were sectioned.
