Making good progress. I'll have to come drive it again once you're done.
Enjoy TSO, went years ago and really enjoyed it.
time to quit procrastinating. I hate working in the floor. But i dont have a lift at my house, snd im not sure a lift would make a difference here. I also hate gear oil.
I sound grumpy. Im not. I just don't wanna do this. Which is why i did everything else first.
see this? Not more hammer. More dissassembly. Pulled the control arms and spindpes to be able to pull the axles out of the carrier.
Its not a fun job here. Thonk im removing the exhaust to make reinstall a little easier.
That was unexpected. Its definitely not healthy. But, its in the new housing. Gonna send it. Hope it survives a few seasons while i decide what to do.
In any automotive endeavor I do the worst part of the job first. Always on the downhill then. I always change the back spark plugs first. Makes me get less angry.

Why do you think it's unhealthy? It's like 20.plus years old, right.
Looks like it had some moisture in it, are the pits in the picture the only ones? Or are there more on other teeth? Don't worry much about the wear on the differential gears, only the ring & pinion need concern. Do try to clean all of the iron oxide out before reassembly.
Its got pitting and deposits on almost every gear. Heavy corrosion on the bare cast iron parts.
It's tired. It has apparently been full of water for a while.
It is what it is. Im gonna send it. Keep my wmeyes ipen for one of gmthe 3.6 gesr ratio pieces.
Was it sitting a really long time in a junkyard or something? Funny that it would rust like that - given how it's full of oil and all.
I'll bet if you hit it with some scotch-brite it'll look ok. Give it a thorough clean-out, fill it up, and off you go.

Ultimately I decided to go with the magnetic drain plug and flush it with cheap gear oil a few times solution.
mazdeuce - Seth said:Solid plan. It's either junk or it's not junk and driving it is the best way to figure that out.
That's how I feel about the boxster motor ha!
Car is coming along nicely Duster.
Test drive this morning. In the rain. In bald street tires rear, and sm7 slicks front.
Rear aint noisy enough to hear over the exhaust! Interior much quieter.
New gauges are awesome
Nut and bolt check, tire swap, inner fender liners now that i found them, diagnose drivers headlight dim amd wont switch, reinstall splitter, and drive for a while until oiling system overhaul
Exactly tge plan, Seth. Fun car friday is my deadline fir 100% (minus oiling). Thats 3 days from now. 72 hours. .
This friday is company meeting about 50 miles from the house. 100 mile round trip should be a good shakedown.
