I thought I was making inroads into your little troupe of car nerds, but I guess it isn't really so! I least would have liked to have met Stampie to learn more about R200 diffs. Oh well, the moment has passed...
How about we promise that you can see all the Dusterdb13 ass crack that you can handle live in person next time?
Get dusterdb13 ass crack and brap belly showing.
Is that the strut tower brace that you gave me that I just gave back to you the other day that I spy on the ACR? LOL
In reply to untchabl :
Nope! That was red. And re-giftted to brap.
This one was a satin finish that came on one of the cars at some point. I THINK it was the acr originally. Then moved to the rt, then E36 M3box, then back to the acr
Wish I would have known you had somebody coming to haul off a truckload of stuff, I would have brought some more stuff from my pile and contributed to the load. Pretty sure I still have most of the stuff that you gave me when we cleaned out your storage area a couple years ago.
Dusterbd13-michael (Forum Supporter) said:definitely time for a full update.
But no, it doesn't run yet.
Not running? WHY?
In reply to Brett_Murphy (Forum Patrón) :
Time and talent. Or the lack thereof.
And i need a break from it for a minute.
What is that valve cover from? Seems like this one is different vs. recent pictures.
Seems like you're inching closer.

There are a few different style 2.0 dohc covers

The silver valve cover is actually a stock neon piece. It was supposed to come back powder coated polished aluminum not silver. Not what I ordered. The valve cover that has been in recent pictures is actually from a Mitsubishi Eclipse which is a very similar motor to the neon. They interchange beautifully. The Mitsubishi Eclipse piece has raised lettering on it.

well, dear god did we make that happen. And cleaned up the property a bit.
So, let me tell you a story of debauchery, fire, and near misses.
It starts innocently enough with the last picture, draining the fuel tank. No drama. We pulled the car into the shop, pulled the hood, and got started pulling the engine.
20200702_100912 by Michael Crawford, on Flickr
Muchkin, a fellow car guy from up the road and I got started in on the engine pull and grabbing the parts I needed to keep. We had planned to go out the bottom, but ran into issues with the axles being seized in the hubs. So the decision was made to come out the top. Due to how bound up I had everything, I couldn't get the car back on its wheels to roll it back to get the hoist in place. So, like the genius I am, I put my floor jack on the front bumper structure and pushed.
We all know what happened next. Luckily, it missed everyone's toes but a few fractions of an inch (½ inch tops for stu) and only stobed up my hand a bit. Swelled up good, but got back to normal in a day or two. We got damned lucky.
Anyway, here's the reason I bought E36 M3box, independent of E36 M3box. While it was on the hoist, I hit it with the pressure washer to take the worst of the grime off.

so, we broke it down and started cleaning. A lot. For a while, on the bright side, near as I can tell the guy that sold it to me did a wonderful job, and didn't hide anything from me. MPX throttle body, no 90 intake, PT clutch, fresh head, etc. evidence that it was boosted at one point, but a good solid used engine. When the block was clean enough, I stripped it down to a short-block and painted the rusty cast iron with valspar black. There's a little ridge in the bores, and some minor scuffing, but overall I was pretty pleased with the shape the short-block is in.

I scrubbed the transmission, and got it painted cast coat aluminum.

then I set about making the short-block a long-block. Added the cast aluminum ACR pan, my ported head, the cleaned and painted other stuff....

I took the opportunity to prep my adjustable cam gears as well. Took them apart to re-polish, and found that all the hardware was garbage. Wound up re-drilling and tapping all the fasteners, ordering all new hardware, polishing the centers, etc. a lot of effort went into bringing them back to life. Near as I can tell they are fidanza v1

kept working towards a complete engine. Re-polished the throttle body, disassembled, cleaned, refinished and reassembled everything else.

even cleaned and painted the power steering lines.

Friday night, brother Dustin and I got the engine in. went WAY smoother than the pull. Went in through the bottom, just like I had planned. No issues, no scratched paint, no drama. Love it. The chunk of plywood was key.

sunday, we had a fun day. Multiple GRM guys showed up in my driveway and VIOLATED the shell of E36 M3box. Flat stripped that car. Then fired up my plasma cutter, and the sawzalls and got rust repair panels out of it. And then we went into storage to purge hardcore. This finished the trade for paint and body supplies. His wife was pissed, mine was happy. He actually left stuff as he ran out of room.

I did forget that! We killed three? Or four?
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael (Forum Supporter) :
Mine still works, but mine smoked 4 times, Marty's had flames. I think 3.
its getting closer. Need a lot of tidy up work, plumbing, filters, throttle body bolts, etc before fire up.
In reply to Patrick (Forum Supporter) :
Agreed. I have an idea up my sleeve for the silver one, but the dohc cover looks RIGHT.
