Just talked to Ian about this more this morning. We might be trying to go AOD for the transmission (if the 3 speed already there isn't fixed easily). sooo, learn me: cheap ford automatics?
Dont break it by not having the converter seated fully when installing.
Thats why it doesn't have an aod now....

I have LS in my 240SX already, but I have enough spares to probably get another one together for this car...possibly even for challenge budget (here in Detroit, we have lots of LS).

Even if the LS mentioned here is spoken for, we should still buy Patrick a drink and pick his brain about sourcing LS motors cheap. Something about rusty ohio 250k mile 2500 work vans seems to net nearly free 6.0s.
Another idea is to find a 1500 2wd truck with a really nice body down in say, alabama, and drive it back up to MI to sell the clean body panels and frame.
watch for your Feb issue of the mag to get the Provenance for the car...
I am meeting a friend of mine for dinner tonight who has several sitting, I might be able to trade/finagle at the very least a high mileage 5.3...but that's the easy part of the equation.
As you said, need to get a whole vehicle, keep harness/pcm/trans, and sell nice body panels/part it out.
That's what I did with mine. Bought T56 Z28, stole running gear, parted out for profit. Car runs like a stock car...because it is all from the same donor. Even with heads/cam/intake I daily it no problem for the last 3 years.
I think this is the ultimate ticket. Just working it into the budget will be difficult.
C-prepared don't care though...so Robbie, there's that angle too...
To be the boring and lame voice of reason here for a moment:
The current 30 over 302 with gt40p heads, "a cam", and edelbrock intake probably makes about 250hp. An LS right out of the truck makes what? 270? 290?
I think we will be a LOT further along if we focus the motor swap time on driving and sorting instead. I think a well-tested alignment is probably worth more than 40 hp (if you already have 250 hp).
Plus, we can do free stuff to bump the power if we "have extra" time. Like I would love to port the heads and port-match the intake and exhaust, and spend some time tuning the carb to get correct jetting and spark advance.
You Know A Boss 302 had 351 heads that can be found, 12 to 1 Pistons make for a beast.

Have consulted 302 enthusiasts here at Ford, GT40P heads are the best iron casting, but pale in comparison to Trick Flow/aftermarket aluminum heads. Which apparently you need in order to make any sort of power on a 302 without forced induction of any kind. My coworkers are guessing realistically around 225-230 hp to the wheels with those mods.
Agreed, we need to dyno it and just drive it. Nobody is swapping anything...even though I did find a full running 5.3L LS truck for $300...just sayin...
I was more on the "Fuel Injection is better and easier to tune/get right, also changes with environment easily. I.e. corrects itself between here in Detroit/Chicago vs Gainesville, where ambient conditions change, and the runs matter."
But yeah, we'll run the Ford powertrain while we tune the chassis/tires/alignment. Just need to get the trans scenario figured out.

I started reading up on CAM-T and C prepared rules. Clearly doesn't fit cam because of the interior, but would the cage preclude it from CAM? If we built an interior for it of course.
Also, engine swap from a different manufacturer seems it might also kick it out of CP, although the spirit was available with the AMC 304 in 79.
Locally they had no problem with us running c prepared. They did say that it wasn't technically legal but nobody really cared. As far as cam goes it is knocked out because of the interior. However locally they said if we built some cardboard and carpeted interior panels laid down some carpet and flushed out the dash some more they would allow us to run it. I make no guarantees about my fiberglass work or body work holding up to salt and snow

Yeah, you are stuck in XP with the swap until you make it CAM legal or swap an AMC motor back in. The rollcage is fine for CAM, you just need to upholster the interior to make it look less "racecar". Make sure you have all the street legality and 200TW tires, too though...
