Not a Super Vee, but if hat 1200cc Motor is in half decent shape it’ll almost be worth the asking price.
if you look at it, check if it has been converted from drum brakes as that’d make it harder to convert back to FV if you’re so inclined.
You have to be a wizard and have an unlimited budget for hiding modifications to enhance performance.
The best cheater wins in that class!
I know some tricks but I'd have to kill you! Actually what I know is so old it may now be common knowledge. I was sworn to secrecy when I spotted some interesting tooling during a visit to an associate's shop who specialized in that class for years. If you did not have one of his motors it was unlikely you could win.
Actually you will find that the level of "cheating" required to win in ANY controlled class is astronomical. Rules written to level the playing field wind up actually raising the ante to play and win. You have to dissect the rule book, read between the lines, think outside the box, and understand how tech inspection looks at things. You know when you have reached the pinnacle of those forms of racing when they change the rules because of what you are doing! :^)
In reply to BoxheadCougarTim :
FV definitely jacked up the prices on the 1200. I thought that Super was sorta an open class. Heck, they allow water cools right? And wings!
It might be home built. Apparently not uncommon back then.
IIRC Super Vee uses the Rabbit GTI motor and as you pointed out, has aero. Plus I assume they don’t have to use stock VW suspension.
Bill, That's what I was reading. But the engine in this would have to go back to 1600? Although there was language that said something about up to 2000.
From vague memory (and I don't claim to be a connoisseur of obscurish VW-based race series):
I suspect my initial mental association of Super V = GTI engine came from the fact that I don't recall ever seeing any aircooled Super Vs for sale...
I think once the water cooled engine was allowed, the AC engine died a quick death.
At one time, Super V was looked at as a feeder series to Indy car.
Probably because, even though a 1600dp is cheap, a gti engine is cheaper and easier to tune. Not as good cg though.
Actually, at the level I've seen for Super Vee engines, I'm not sure they're still cheap. IIRC in final state they ran something like 160-180hp or more. At those power levels I expect similar refresh prices to what you see in older FAs.
Mind you, getting those power levels out of a 1600dp isn't going to be cheap or great for longevity either.
