I never really kept records, but have always tossed the receipts in a big envleope.
I got hit in my MGB by a guy that ran a stop sign. The insurance guy wanted to give me 1500 bucks for it. So the next day I went into his office with the stack of receipts, used his copy machine and then was offerd $6000.00.
The Morgan came with detailed MX. Almost like a history of the car. So I have kept it going.

Leo - I always keep the receipts for all of the cars - even the van. Brother was the middle of a car sandwich once with his 15 year old Saab turbo, and was able to show the car was not a clunker by providing the supporting paper work. Well worth the extra folder in the filing cabinet.

The PO of my Volvo V70 T5 gave me a three ring binder, with the car, detailing everything that had been done to it, receipts, etc. I stick the new receipts in there.

I keep a running tally of expenses. I include purchase price and repair costs in this but not consumables or insurance. The plan was to keep the costs at less than a new Kia at about $100 per month. After the initial spike, I am far ahead of this goal by doing all my own work after 10 years.

I keep them all in a binder.
