Do be careful on the diameters and lengths.  There is always the temptation to go too big and too short. But the song begins with the piccolo and ends with the Bassoon instead of the other way around. 
  Enzo was always careful  to undersized his exhaust pipes because races are won coming out of the corner not catching up at the end of the straights.

Yes, I think as 3D printers become more prevalent, they may replace this technology.
