I assumed it didn't need to be stated.

rcutclif wrote: semi- related question for the other noodles on here. I've noticed that most people are ok to speed (break the law by driving faster than the speed limit), yet most of those same people will wait 2 minutes at a red light at 2 am with no other cars around. Both speeding and 'stopping, looking and running' a red light are equally illegal (i.e. they are both illegal), yet most will do one and not the other. To make matters worse, running the red light may frequently actually save more time than speeding. If (you/they/we) speed, why don't (you/we/they) also run red lights?

Oh I've ran the hell out of some ran some red lights. Mainly because I ride a bike most of the time and they don't trip most sensors unless a car is there with you. It was such a problem in tn they made a law allowing it.

We still have to treat them as a stop & hold before we can proceed here.....our law covering that issue is brand spanking new too.

Yeah we're supposed to stop and hold for a bit too I guess, but no one really does..... Well maybe some of the posters in this thread would lol.

I 'accelerate briskly' to at or slightly above the posted speed limit.
And occasionally avoid 'normal braking maneuvers' before or during turns. You know, typical Miata stuff.
(Helps that my drive to work is at latest still before 5AM though)

having lots of flat rural roads have led to me doing alot of dumb things, although ive never been big on top speed type stuff, just running the gears and the occasional drag race. these days i just live with the fact my local track is 2hrs away. it also helps i sold the "fast" car. it wasnt that fast either!

I came this close to a collision with some guy on a 1970s Honda CB-something tonight. Leaving work, I was waiting at the stop light at the entrance to our office, and when the light turned green I started to pull out. The guy on the bike was speeding and he ran the light; I hit the brakes, but he never slowed down and just missed my front bumper by a few inches. Scared the crap out of me.

On top of that, he was wearing one of those stupid salad bowl-style helmets and was in shirtsleeves, so it wouldn't have been good if we had collided. Hopefully he woke up and paid attention for the rest of his drive.

That's because MOST cars DO accelerate slowly compared to bikes. A 250cc bike will accelerate faster than 95% of the cars on the street...

Describe "fast".
Do I go faster than the posted speed limit? Sure. Every single day. Do I do 70 mph on a side street? No. (50 mph sometimes, but don't tell anyone) Do I go 100 mph on a wide open highway? Ummm, yes I have. But not too often... The road I cruise to and from work is posted 65 mph and 80 mph is comfortable... But I am only usually able to do that when I work Saturdays and the highway is empty. But that isn't really your question is it?

Wow this thread has sure snow balled.
I think we can all agree, that we drive a little over the posted speed limit on the streets. We can also agree, that if we are on this board, we have some experience with one of the following; auto-cross, track days, drag racing, track racing, etc... From there we can also continue on to agree, that WE can NEVER know what the person in front of us are thinking, and now with cell phones, we cannot know what they are doing while driving.

Have I been stupid while driving on the street. YES. When I was in my teens I lost my license for speeding, it cost me a job! My parents were none too happy. Heck I was none too happy about it either.

Someone else said it here, Cars are 2500#'s plus. We need to be the ambassadors for safe driving on the street. VIgo, I have not seen how you drive. IF you are capable of keeping yourself safe, while not intimidating others go for it, I will applaud your safe driving skills.

I have seen a great Bumper sticker that sums up this whole thread. It reads; "You Can't Fix Stupid!"

IIRC, most in the liter category are quicker than any production supercar. There must be nothing but Buell Blasts, Harleys, and 70-80's 400cc bikes where he is....

This incident didn't have anything to do with acceleration rates. The light had been red for several seconds when I started pulling out slowly (I've been T-boned before so I'm always cautious at intersections.) The street speed limit is 30mph. The guy on the motorcycle simply was driving too fast and not paying attention.
