I need to add a tire rack to my Econo-trailer flat trailer. Has anyone else here done this? If so, I'd like to know what the dimensions are, what you might do differently if you were to do it again, etc.
I'm also curious if anyone makes a kit for this.

Are you thinking of something like this?
We made one for our old trailer. Took a weekend, looked like the one above. We just used 1" square tubing, and welded it together.
Note that I was 6 at the time, so the details are a little fuzzy.

That photo is from the Trailex site, but I have the same rack. It's not currently on my trailer and it's disassembled in my attic. If you need measurements, I can figure them out, but I probably won't be able to get to it until Thursday.
Or, you could send an e-mail to Trailex and ask, "What are the dimensions of your tire racks?"

I have made several out of 1" gas piping welded together. Cheap, strong and available at home depot.

The closest one is across town. I'd have to go take some pics. The first one I built was for a friend. The others have all been for people who saw the first one and wanted something similar. Sort of like building a cage, but you don't have to be very precise with the notching. They look like the aluminum one in the above pic, but they are made out of round steel pipe. You can add a stone guard to the front and a spare trailer tire carrier to the side.
Depending on the weight of the tires I would go with conduet. Use 1 inch or
1 1/4 ID electrical steel tubing. You can use thinwall or heavy wall. It may be cheaper then black pipe and except for the welded joints you won't have to paint it as it's galvinized. I made a tire rack for my garage using this tubing. holds 4 tires size 255/40 X17 on 17 X 9 wheels.

The forces exerted on a tire rack holding up to 8 wheels and tires bouncing down the road mounted to a trailer are so much greater than a rack hanging on a garage wall. Stick with the steel pipe. Four or five 10 footers of 1" black gas pipe will cost you less than $100. Pick up a couple of master locks for the ends of the tire hold down bar, and a can of Hammerite paint.
