The "issue" is that normally when removing the transmission in said application, an engine bar is used to support the engine as a cross member needs to be removed.
Should I just find a truck tire, put it under the engine and use a ratchet strap instead? I'm planning on shimming the transmission off onto a tire.
I'll also have a pair of moderately green, but decent wrenches with me as my mobility is still quite limited.
All the self pull yards here have a portable gentry
Sample

I saw a couple of guys working on a car in my local yard a few years ago. I'm not sure they were pulling a transmission, but they had a drive shaft laid across the fenders and a ratchet strap around it.
Every time I've dropped a fwd transmission in the 'yard (especially when I only wanted the trans, not the engine); I took off every mount except the front (side? as in frame rail to accessory drive area) engine mount, thus letting the trans end swing down to a convenient place to finish pulling the bellhousing bolts and let it drop to the ground. Then the engine can just hang-dangle there for someone else to deal with the gantry crane if they really want it.

That sounds pretty close to what I was considering, I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be violating etiquette.

Yep, mobile gantry/portable cranes are used a bunch in the self pull yards around my parts. Meanwhile, a dead car or truck tire makes for a great head, trans, etc, support.
