Various kids friends are getting to driving age, my youngest too but she has zero interest in learning right now. But a friend was asking when her daughter can first enter an autocross or autocross school? I used to know this E36 M3 but I have no idea. she's hitting the magic 14 years 9 months for her initial permit, but I assume she probably has to be either 15 or 16 at the youngest?

Depends on the group, but I think SCCA will allow with a parent or instructer in the vehicle with them under a valid learners permit.

Best advice, reach out to the specific group you want to run with as results will vary, sometimes widely.

As far as I am aware, most clubs allow drivers to drive in accordance with their road license privileges.

In other words, if she has a permit to drive on the street with a licensed driver in the passenger seat, the club will allow the same scenario (but will not allow her to drive solo).

I think that means in MI that the age is 14 years 8 months.

This is exactly how it's worded in the SCCA rallycross rules. I assumed the language was plucked from the SOLO rulebook but I haven't actually checked.

Rule book should be somewhere in there. But you are going to have to ask the individual clubs. Each have different rules for age limits.

Wow, getting your permit at 14 years and 9 months sounds like Texas, not Michigan... but I guess they wanted to start 'em buying cars young!

We're not an SCCA affiliate, but our insurance won't allow even licensed drivers under 18 to compete. As my representative told me, "If there was an incident with a minor driver, you'd be covered - ONCE. Then you'd be dropped or made cost-prohibitive." So we just don't allow it, which is a shame, because we run at a high school and I hate having to tell 95% of them that they can't drive.

There was some kid driving at Nationals with his Mom as a passenger IIRC because he still had his learners permit.

Our local circle track let's you race at 14. I decided my kid was not old enough so he had to wait until he was 15.

Not a "car", but kids too young for driver's licenses can enter SCCA autox in karts.

Our insurance dictates that drivers and passengers must have a license (so 16 minimum) - no permits. Minors can compete in karts at age 12, but we pay an extra fee for that privilege.

Thanks guys, I'll look up some old SCCA friends and ask them, I think some are now safety stewards so should know even though I haven't talked to them for years.

IIRC - SCCA allows a permitted driver. Our "non-SCCA" club says licensed drivers only. Apparently, that's an insurance requirement for our club's policy. Kazoo Jr. was a little disappointed because on a permit he's eligible for the 2nd half of this year's season. I may have to scout out an SCCA event or two so he can give it a try.
