Does this sound like it just needs a tensioner? Or are there bigger issues?

Very nice BMW 740i with 116k mi runs and drives like new. Non-smoker car, tires, brakes... all good, has a chatter when warmed up, at idle and code for cam timing too advanced. Car clean, can be driven as is.
Tensioner and guides, yes.
If you are an optimist you could just slap a new tensioner on there in a few minutes.
Depends on the "real" code . . . Radar says run far away . . .
cam too advanced... VANOS failure?
That's a possibility.
Dean1484: what year 740??
Cam too advanced could be simply the camshaft position sensor. I'm still betting that it is the VANOS though.
The BMW V8s are known for being hard on timing chains if the oil isn't changed religiously. I'll take "timing chain, tensioner and guides" for $500, Alex.
