Cam across a $3k 84 928 5 speed. Bad paint, worse interior. Runs fine. No history on clutch, timing belt, etc. Sounds like a potential gaping hole in my wallet, right?

After briefly owning a 951S and having to work on it, I think I'd rather have that $1500 Sebring Kit Car than a beat up 928.
At least my 924 is stupid simple to work on and I guess if you rip out the luxury stuff in the 928 you'd have a relatively quick V8 RWD German Muscle car.
Now I'm trying to find out what years phone dials were sold. This information is going to be very useful someday. Wouldn't buy the 928 you're describing.

Only if you care about it working. If I were to own one, I'd rip out the 80's electronics and go back to basics with modern EFI and very little luxury stuff inside. Basically an updated Italian supercar where everything looks nice, but very little of it works but you don't care since the car still runs and drives :)
I had a cheapo 928S, an '84 5-speed like this one. Mine was GP White with Cancan Red interior. It was fun and wasn't a huge money pit. The clutch pedal broke during my test drive!
Anyway, I say go for it. Most enginey stuff on a 16v car is pretty DIYable, and the electronics aren't as bad as people say.

That's a 924 ;)
Of course it is, but it's an awesome photo.
In truth, all that Pasha threw me off. I had to do a triple take to make sure ;)

Isn't 3k steep?
I feel like if you're gonna get a $3k 928, it realy should be THIS EPIC ONE WITH THE REAR END PAINTED IN A BEACH SCENE
Woody said:I actually wouldn't mind an automatic in one of these things.
Me either. To me, 928s are GT cars, not true sports cars. I can live with an auto in a GT car.
For $3k, it's almost worth buying it just to park it on your lawn so you can look at it.
There's an automatic 928 for $1k on the Phoenix Craigslist: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/d/1980-porsche-928/6481142217.html
