...what could one do with this?

If it indeed suffers from a worn cam, chances are it's been missing a few oil changes. I'd approach with caution or run away...
Would the bell housing match up to some newer GM engines. I'm assuming it's got the Rover version of the old GM aluminum V8.Say,something like the 4.3 V6 or a supercharged 3800.
I swear i've seen one of these with the BMW I6 in it, and i remember it damn near bolting up for some strange reason.
Whatever side the front drive shaft is on, pick the correctly oriented Chevy 350 or Ford 302 with an automatic transmission and transfer case. Have a bastard vehicle with comfy seats.
Usually the question is "what's the worst that can happen?"
In this case, it should be "what's the best that could happen?"
I'm thinking a lot of blood, sweat, tears, dollars to end up with something not worth much and that continues to fall apart faster than it can be fixed. Walk away.
In reply to Swank Force One:
Apparently, they were available in other markets with a BMW Diesel, so you may be right.
The Range Rover was the one that came with the BMW diesel, these are/were available with Diesel engines but that's a Rover Diesel, not a BMW.
The Range Rover engine bay is pretty short, it's got that little V8 in it and that fills it up pretty well. These are - I think - based on the old Range Rover platform and so I think the BMW I6 would be pretty tight in there. You might be able to do it but it could involve cutting core supports and such.
A better swap would be a Toyota/Lexus v8. Add 120hp and improve fuel economy without adding weight. Yup.

Just talk about it would be the cheapest option.
I would look at a Mercedes diesel swap and then throw a turbo on it. "Adequate" or "Good" could be the assessment.
