This is wild.

What happens if no spaces are empty?

What happens if a kid runs in front of the car?

What happened to driving?

Not my thing, but pretty cool nonetheless....though it does look like it's going to nail that curb on the first turn.

"Your honor, the car was driving itself when it ran that stop sign..."

While that's all very impressive, I don't think just that would cause me to have a "stress free lifestyle"

No more tipping the Valet! Yet another person put out of work by technology

What happens when a dozen of these are roaming the garage at once and can't find any open spots because the place is full?

What happens if two of them hit each other? Do they swear to secrecy and move on like nothing happened? Or just run away together?

What happens if it parks itself in a handicapped spot and you get a ticket?

Living a parking-free lifestyle is the least of my concerns. Much as I love driving, I want a car that'll take me from NC to WA while I read, sleep, eat, and handle fillups.

As slow as it was, if I end up behind one, there is a fair chance it won't survive the experience.

1) "Automatic Parking" has been installed in almost every vehicle since cars have been invented, except we called it "Dad". (Dad at entrance of mall: "I'll go find a spot, you guys meet me in the food court")

2) How does the car get the ticket out of the machine (the one that makes the gate go up)?

There are more drawbacks to this than possible to list. Audi has wasted a trillion dollars in time and money chasing a pipe dream.

What if a piece of paper blows over the camera. How about a board with a nail sticking up. What is the computer going to do when I swap in a manual trans and twin turbos?

I personally enjoy driving.

  1. The vehicle circles forever. In the future when this is common and buildings install fewer parking spaces since customers don't have to wait to find parking, this will be common.

  2. The car slams on the brakes when the motion sensors and/or computer vision are triggered. Better than your average driver I'm sure.

  3. It was like totally too hard and stuff LOLZ! ^_^

No, but seriously, driving on the street sucks hard for most of us, and I for one will welcome our autonomous car overlords.

They have that. It is called a bus.

Will never be offered in the US is my guess. The reason will be that the threat of product liability litigation will be too high.

That is cool. Spooky, but cool... There was a bit on NPR a while back talking about cars in the future dropping you off and going to find themselves a parking space. Hmmm.

Our new car came with the LIDAR brake override for city driving. Supposed to be active in traffic under 20mph.

I can't do it. I told my wife I was going to try it and I just couldn't do it. I just can't relinquish responsibility for my safety and a liability to an appliance.

Legislation will lag way behind the technology on this one.

Yeah I'd have to get used to that by testing it with inflatable obstacles before I'd actually trust it with a solid object. And even then I might trust it, but I wouldn't want to use it.

Won't happen until we make the great mistake of all robot sci-fi, giving emotions to things that shouldn't have them.

That's what I was wondering about too - how does it handle parking in a garage where you have to pick up a ticket and pay to get out?
