I've managed to get my rolla down the 1/4 in 15.7, and I SUCK @ drag racing, a decent driver should be able to get my car down the 1/4 in sub 15 seconds... and that is running 3.72 final drive instead of 4AGE typical final drives of 4.30

MY 4AGE carries about 25-30#/ft more torque than most 4AGEs, and I still get 30+ mpg on the highway. She is also emissions friendly.

Want more torque... try a Rotrex on a 4AGE, gentleman in the UK has a locost/locust with a rotex mounted to a 4AGE and he's planting 260+hp, and over 175#/ft

If we are going non-inline. I vote for the lancia V4

BMW M10?

Ok, not really, but the versions that found their way into Formula 1 sure put out a lot of power. The amount seems to grow with each passing year.

I would like a F20C in something. If the engine is to mounted the wrong way, a K20 would do it for me. I would also place a vote for the ECOTEC.

My favorite I4 was the 1.8L DOHC Isuzu 4XF1 in my Geo. Small and can make a lot of power, but not exactly light. Very different from the 1.9L Saturn LL0. That I mainly like for being light.

Of course, I'd take a 3.0L Porsche I4.

K-series transmissions take a dump at anything much above stock power levels. Not exactly engine-related, but it is drivetrain-related. It can be fixed (straight-cut gears) for about $5000. Really.

Ford just announced the 2.0L Turbo four in the Explorer will have 240hp / 270 lbft. More torque than their 3.5L V6 even.

also the honda K doesn't really fit the bill because even though it gets decent gas mileage you it may get offset by the fact that they commonly burn oil

There's probably a section at suzuka circuit or fuji speedway where 6th gear acceleration would be useful.

If you don't mind spending $20k on it, an older VW TDI can make some pretty good power and still get quite good mpg.

I've never seen nor heard of that issue. The k series tranny in the rsx is frequently fine beyond 400 HP.

I know of a SM class crx in this area pushing 360 at the wheels with a stock k series transmission. Numerous seasons with no issues.

I feel the exact same way about the Miata. The 5-speed was understandable because it just needed to be wound out in 5th to really make the car fun to drive. But when they added a 6th gear and just tightened up the gear ratios instead of making it a taller 6th, they really missed an opportunity. Didn't make any sense to me. They would have achieved much better fuel economy with a taller 6th gear.

The 6th gear actually revs higher in 6th than the 5spd in 5th. o_O

That is my biggest complaint about my Miata. It is nice to know that when I am cruising on the interstate in 6th at 65 mph that I am building boost already and that I can zip up to 80+ mph in no time without downshifting, but I'd rather have better fuel economy and an actual overdrive 6th.

I've been tempted at times to just turbo the M10 in the 2002 instead of swapping out for something more modern. I know I could have substantial power, and there's a lot more room for plumbing and what have you with the SOHC head...

Space and reflected F1 glory vs an extra 30% power from stock compared to the M42... Pragmatism takes it.
