How long term is "long enough?" :) I sold my '87 FC 4.5 years ago and to my knowledge every part was still available from Mazda. That's 22 years. At that point I believe most FB parts were still available, but they had stopped selling 12A rotor housings.

You would also probably go from a unreliable terrible MPG torqueless engine to somethat that is the total opposite and you would then have near the perfect sports car since it already weighs near the same as a FRS

This.

A real sportscar with room in the back.

kreb wrote: RX-8 prices have dropped so much that they might be worth looking at as track rats even with the Rotary, seeing as being flogged is one thing that the engine happily does - if you can afford the fuel.

Rotaries are only inefficient at low load/part throttle.

Under WOT they can approach Diesel-like BSFCs. Especially the ones with fun porting. (I've seen SAE papers with BSFC in the .42-.45 range)

UNfortunately for the RX-8, the engine precludes fun porting, so the first step should be to rip the Renesis out and install a proper engine with one big exhaust port and one big intake port per rotor.

See, I drive bridge ports for the fuel economy benefits...

Were the details ever released?

I feel like whoever is first to develop a plug and play swap kit for the RX-8 will sell a ton. Unfortunately it still seems to be a case of piece it together from 5 different vendors or pay a shop $$$.

I say that as someone that daily drives a stock RX-8 and really likes it...

They have a running swap in a NB miata that they drove cross country the day after they got it on the road. They are finishing up some details on the swap which I would think will carry over to the RX8.

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=553881&page=4

"The NB is our development chassis and at this time we have not fitteld this package to the NA. Speaking from the V8 conversions it will be a tight fit and will require the hood bracing trimmed. If you take the measurement at the highest point on the V8 the difference is about .250 less on the NA. Running the LLT intake will provide an additional .750 clearance over LFX intake manifold. The LFX intake has a bit of additional material that will allow for trimming which may also help.

We are working for a CARB EO # and at this time... looks very positive for early spring. I am doing a new wiring harness that conforms to standard. In my hast to assemble the car I omitted a couple needed circuit's that are necessary.

At this time I can have one on one approval for the LFX conversion in the MX5 chassis. This will allow for cars to be built!

Updates on the drive line are ongoing and the sway bar and shock package are being fine tuned...........Hope this helps

Steve"

So you want power but like the stock gauges etc.

What about a Mazdaspeed turbo engine out of a Mazda 3? I understand that using them in an in line configuration involves accommodating the bump at the back of the engine (high pressure pump?) so you might have to notch the firewall. but you'd get to keep your trans and possibly ECM (unless you needed to swap out to a Mazdaspeed ECM). Easy to get over 300 bhp out of that engine.

The original target for release was this spring. I think the price of the lfx will not be more compelling than an lsx swap. The swap will also require a differential too. And that is before you deal with the can-bus. Then you have fuel, exhaust, etc. I find an E36 lsx swap a more budget friendly endeavor with a chassis that is capable enough. Vorschlag has sold around 100 of these swap kits and continues to develop them. In fact, they quoted me a turn key price of $22k to $26k with me providing the car.

If I provide the labor, this swap could run me $15k or less. I don't have fabrication skills or time to do it for challenge money.

Interesting - around 100 kits for the E36? We've sold more than that for the Miata.

I agree that price will not be the reason to use the LFX instead of an LS. It'll have to be some other attribute.

In reply to Keith Tanner:

It may have to do with price of their kit more than anything. That and the introduction of some cheaper kits that hit the market. There is a swap kit available now that cost less than a set of Vorshlag headers.

I have wanted to take the millenia s motor and re grind the cams and then add a relatively miled turbo. Take that and somehow put it in a RX8.

don't ask me why I want this. There is no good reason to do this swap. I just think it would be cool.

Has the RX8 power production to cost ratio gotten better?

Is there a header/junkyard turbo/charge cooler that is affordable?

Was the Can-bus problem alleviated?

I'll bit - I don't understand doing 99% of the work to install a V6, when going to a less-stressed V8 is just 1% more effort. I get it that it (probably) weighs less, and is (probably) less expensive, but these cars aren't Formula V's, and what's another 30 lbs when you've got 430 hp.

I'm good with that answer ;)

My dream was a Mazda MZI V6 (Ford Duratec) prepped like a Noble M400 (twin turbos) into a NC or a RX8. It is silly for certain, but it's also quite possibly doable.
