teach me about coolant expansion tanks , the aftermarket kind. My e30 has a capless radiator and i thought about replacing the overflow/reservoir/expansion tank with a moroso alum. one. I want to replace the rad to the kind with a filler cap or put one of those filler cap tube things you put in the section of rad. hose, ideas , yay/neigh , pros/cons .

Might help to state why you want to use an aftermarket tank and a different radiator. Want more bling? Yours is broken? Need packaging space? There are LOTS of OEM expansion tanks available for near-free at the junkyard that get the job done quite well, so the aftermarket tanks are usually used for bling factor. Usually, when a remote expansion tank is used, it's because of packaging reasons. Sometimes, the top of the radiator isn't the highest point in the system, so it makes for a really crummy fill point. Sometimes it's done for cost reasons. There are lots of reasons for different designs out there, usually sticking with the factory design is your best bet...usually.

Moroso makes really nice e-tanks, they're a little better then Canton's tanks IMO. Nothing the matter with adding a little functional bling, Bryce, I replaced my stock intercooler tank w/a Moroso alum. intercooler tank for added capacity, actually double the stock capacity. Later I added a Moroso engine coolant degas tank to match everything up, both use the factory screw on cap.

...unless you don't appreciate paying for bling, like me!
well i want to reduce the weight, clean up the engine compartment and make room where the stock coolant reservoir/expansion tank for intercooler piping down the road....and i will end up painting the alum flat black any way so the bling factor is not my main concern.
