I drive 80 miles/day round trip. Roughly 25% of that is coasting with the car shutoff.

You must have lots of hills or something I guess. I have a 5 mile residential-ish drive to the highway. Then 18 or so highway miles to work.

Not really a great idea to shut off the engine in rush hour traffic and try to coast......

bad. IMHO.
But a few years ago it was the hot setup. I was behind an HF during the drive home yesterday. I'm guessing it wasn't stock, either.

2 hongs don't make a right

I'm obviously not a "purist" or anything. It just ticks me off when I search "HF" on craigslist, and 10 clapped out pieces of E36 M3 with swaps pop up. An 88 HF weighed roughly 150lbs. less than an Si. I can remove 150lbs. from an Si in an afternoon, and aside from the lack of A/C, you'd never know it. I prefer this method to the "Destroy an icon of fuel efficiency" method.

...unless you live in the mountains...where there is no "rush hour traffic," and plenty of...um...mountains, upon which to coast.

For a B16A track car, the HF chassis does make a nice basis: no sunroof plus it already has a four-injector setup. I do miss a/c, though. Call me a wimp, but it's the main reason the car sits so much.

I thought the main reasons were your Miata and Porsche :)

I bet most don't encounter mountain roads on their commute to/from work. You knew what I was getting at.

118 MPG is pretty good but at VIR in Aug I managed 25+ for two days (4 1/2 hr sessions each day in my Si

lots more fun than hypermiling (IMHO )

I had an 85 Si parts car, and have always wanted another. Recessed headlights with the clear wind deflectors ftw, plus the 85 came with a better spoiler. The 1G Hf is lighter, and has better aero but the solid front rotors aren't ideal for performance.

Chang's a veteran autocrosser as well, and has been dabbling in rallycross as of late. He's a helluva driver, better than I could dream of being. He's won nationals in a CRX. This is just a different kind of driving. VERY different. But Chang knows his Hondas - he's run his own Honda shop for years and does excellent work (satisfied customer here :) ).

The second-gen HF has vented rotors, but I couldn't find decent pads. Mine now has Si discs up front. It also currently has a bad master cylinder, but that's a different story.

I thought that suspension setup seemed awfully performance oriented.

Heh, I'll have to ask Chang about this car next time I see him. I rode along in his ST '89 Civic Si for a run at the BMWCCA autocross on Sunday, and I'd say the man knows how to make an EF handle even better than he can make one sip gas :).

Better suspension should equal less energy lost to bumps in the road (roll over rather than "into"), and less slowing for corners. (maintain momentum) Thats my theroy, feel free to find holes in it.

Going fast around corners is very important in hypermiling. As for bumps, there are tradeoffs either way.

Lower = less aero drag?

Yeah--dude was a MONSTER in the New England Region SCCA. A true Honda guy and an absolute beast of a driver.

Great to see him doing something like this.

Was? Is. He's usually 2+ seconds per minute faster than my STS Miata in his ST Civic when I head down to Devens :).

Sorry--"was" is in relation to me--I haven't done an NER event in something like 4 years. Those 270 car fields w/ 100 novices that resulted in a 4-run/8-hour day were pointless to me.

I got 9 runs at the last NER event. Entries are down a little since then, event efficiency is WAY up. You should come out some time .
